Ornans is a cultural and tourist center located in the heart of the first plateau of the Jura massif , in the Loue valley. The town offers tourists a wide range of outdoor activities thanks to the presence of the river and the surrounding cliffs, allowing the practice of white water sports, fishing , hiking, climbing and cycling . Birthplace of the painter Gustave Courbet for whom it inspired numerous paintings including the famous A Funeral in Ornans , it is home to a museum dedicated to the man and his works which welcomes tens of thousands of visitors each year. The city also benefits from a rich heritage with twelve historic monuments registered or classified, numerous private mansions and its houses whose facades bathed by the river have earned it the nickname ""little Venice of Comtoise"".
